The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Ciarán McQuillan, recently engaged with students at Coleraine College as part of his ongoing ‘Breaktime with the Mayor’ sessions. These sessions aim to foster a better understanding of civic duties and leadership among young people in the community.
During his visit to Coleraine College, located on Carthall Road, the Mayor met with students from Year 8 to Year 12 who serve on the school council. The discussions centred around themes of citizenship and leadership. Mayor McQuillan shared insights into his political journey and encouraged students to become involved in politics from a young age. “I was delighted to meet with the pupils from Coleraine College and give them an insight into how the democratic process works,” stated the Mayor. “It was also interesting to hear about the work the young people do as part of the school council.”
The visit also provided an opportunity for the Mayor to discuss his collaboration with the NI-based mental health charity, MindWise. He highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and reassured the students about the support available for those in need. “Thank you to Coleraine College and the members of their student council for inviting me along. It was a fantastic opportunity to talk with the young people about politics and their future careers, along with mental health and highlighting what help is available for anyone who is struggling,” added the Mayor.
The ‘Breaktime with the Mayor’ sessions signify an important engagement between civic leaders and young citizens, aiming to inspire and educate students about their potential roles in both local governance and community welfare. Local schools interested in participating in similar sessions are encouraged to reach out to the council for more information.
