Lisburn and Castlereagh Invests £10m in Community Projects, Sports Facilities, and Green Spaces

The Lisburn & Castlereagh area is celebrating a significant milestone, having benefited from nearly £10 million of investment across 40 projects in the past three years. This development comes through council-led initiatives supported by funding from both Northern Ireland and UK Government sources.

According to the council, the investment aims to enhance community spaces, improve sports and leisure amenities, and boost local infrastructure. Funding was secured to ensure balanced growth throughout villages, towns, and larger urban areas.

Extensive Community Enhancements

With a total spend of £9,556,415, external contributions amounted to £4,013,997. The funds have been used for the installation of all-weather pitches at Lough Moss, implementation of village plans in Anahilt, Drumbo and Glenavy, as well as the development of a digital art sculpture trail in Hillsborough Forest Park. Village improvements in Moneyreagh were also carried out, and visitor numbers to Lisburn almost doubled in December thanks to an enhanced light festival and festive programme.

Future projects include modernising play parks in Crossnacreevy, Ryan Park, and Drumlough in the coming weeks, while a new all-weather playing surface will shortly be installed in Maghaberry. Building on the success of Northern Ireland’s only national standard BMX track, further improvements to the Lisburn facility are under discussion, alongside the creation of a new skatepark at Bells Lane Park.

Mayor’s Perspective

Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Kurtis Dickson, highlighted the importance of continuing investment, stating: “Balanced investment, accessibility, sustainability and facilities for all are the key aims of capital projects across our area. Through partnership working our diverse range of projects meet the needs of local businesses, communities and partner organisations.”

He also noted enhancements to public safety in Anahilt, Glenavy and Maghaberry, an extensive grant scheme for local heritage in Moira, Royal Hillsborough and Moneyreagh, and the expansion of Lough Moss to include 3G pitches, a community hub and garden, as well as improved car parking and lighting.

Commenting on forthcoming developments, Councillor Dickson said: “A key new project for us is the further development of the Bells Lane complex with the addition of a skateboard park adjacent to the Lisburn BMX Racetrack. I am looking forward to seeing it progressing from design to construction within the year. Alongside all of this, the £55m redevelopment of the new Dundonald International Ice Bowl continues at pace.”
