Ulster University Expands Derry~Londonderry Campus with Timber Quay Acquisition

Timber Quay Acquisition Confirms University Expansion

The Department for the Economy and Ulster University have announced the acquisition of the Timber Quay building on Derry’s Strand Road, marking a notable milestone for the city and district. The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Lilian Seenoi Barr, welcomed the move, highlighting its significance in helping to expand Ulster University’s Derry~Londonderry campus.

This development underscores the ongoing commitment to growing Magee, with a focus on driving economic prosperity, enhancing opportunities for young people, and strengthening the region’s capacity for education and research.

Commitment to Growth and Innovation

Mayor Barr emphasised that the expansion goes beyond physical infrastructure and is vital to creating a dynamic learning environment. According to the Mayor, “We continue to champion the growth of Magee, recognising its transformative potential to drive economic prosperity, create opportunities for our young people, and enhance our city’s vibrant cultural and intellectual landscape.” The Mayor noted that gaining access to Timber Quay will help the university work towards the ambition of reaching 10,000 students by 2032.

She further highlighted the role this growth will play in delivering the Derry and Strabane City Deal projects, including the Cognitive Analytics & Digital Robotics Innovation Centre (CADRIC) and the School of Medicine. These initiatives aim to attract investment, stimulate job creation, and foster research excellence.

Positive Prospects for the Community

The Mayor stressed that the university’s expansion will benefit the wider community by increasing footfall in the Strand Road area and encouraging further investment. Local businesses are expected to gain from this heightened activity, helping secure a prosperous future for the region. “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Department, Ulster University, and all the stakeholders who have played a crucial role in making this happen,” the Mayor concluded.

This acquisition not only strengthens the city’s academic profile but also reinforces its reputation as a hub for innovation, research, and talent development—ultimately creating lasting opportunities for local residents and businesses alike.
