The Northern Ireland Department of Health has announced an expansion of its winter flu vaccination programme. From 15 January 2025, free influenza vaccinations are now available to everyone aged 50 to 64 years old by 31 March 2025.
This initiative aims to boost vaccination uptake amid a severe flu season that continues to impact the health service. The announcement comes as health officials urge eligible individuals to get vaccinated to protect themselves and alleviate pressure on healthcare staff.
Expanded Eligibility for Free Flu Vaccinations
Health Minister Mike Nesbitt emphasised the importance of increasing vaccination rates among all eligible groups. “The health service is still being impacted by a severe flu season and increasing uptake amongst all eligible groups will help to alleviate the pressure on our staff and ensure we can treat those who are sickest, in addition to helping to protect individuals,” he said.
The expanded programme now includes adults aged 50 or over by 31 March 2025, extending the previous eligibility criteria. Those eligible can receive the vaccine through participating GP practices, community pharmacies, or Health and Social Care (HSC) Trust vaccination clinics.
Health Officials Highlight Vaccination Benefits
Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Michael McBride stressed that vaccination remains the best defence against severe illness from influenza, particularly for those in clinical risk groups. “If you are in one of the higher risk groups and have not yet had your vaccine, please arrange to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect yourself,” he urged.
Rachel Spiers, Immunisation and Vaccination Programme Manager at the Public Health Agency (PHA), added, “Vaccination lowers your chances of having serious complications or dying from winter viruses. This is especially true for people who are at high risk of complications.”
Role of Community Pharmacies
Gerard Greene, Chief Executive of Community Pharmacy NI, noted the significant role community pharmacies play in the vaccination effort. “With the expansion of this service to include those in the 50–64 age bracket, community pharmacy teams continue to play an important role in vaccinating the public,” he said. Greene encouraged eligible individuals to contact their local participating pharmacy to get the flu vaccine.
