Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has reiterated his commitment to Northern Ireland’s veterans community during Armed Forces Day celebrations in Coleraine, highlighting a recently launched Government support line designed to help former service personnel navigate benefits and access services.
The Minister’s visit to the Causeway Coast town on Saturday (20 June) came as thousands gathered for the annual event, which featured military parades, RAF flypasts, and family activities throughout the town centre.
New Support Line Opens for Veterans
Lyons used the occasion to promote the Veterans Support Line NI, which went live on 26 May as the first dedicated Government support line for armed forces veterans in Northern Ireland. The telephone and text service provides tailored information on benefits eligibility, housing support, and other services to veterans, serving personnel, and their families.
Operating Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm (excluding public holidays), the support line aims to address long-standing accessibility gaps identified through engagement with the Veterans Commissioner and representative groups. The Department has also appointed a senior official as strategic lead for continued service delivery.
Lyons Highlights ‘Clear Need’ for Tailored Support
Minister Lyons said: “My Department has had significant engagement with veterans’ organisations over recent months and we have identified a clear need within the armed forces community for tailored support.
“We have worked hard to better understand the barriers veterans face in their everyday lives and, in turn, identify how we can best support them in the range of areas for which we are responsible.
“I am delighted to be at this Armed Forces Day to raise awareness of the Support Line and encourage veterans and their families to avail of the service.”
Context of Veterans’ Needs
The launch comes amid ongoing concerns about the unique challenges facing Northern Ireland’s veteran population. Research published in 2024 suggested that the overall mental well-being of veterans residing in Northern Ireland may be poorer than other veteran populations, partly due to the region’s distinct political and security legacy. Veterans in Northern Ireland have also faced particular difficulties accessing specialist mental health services, with some reporting lengthy waits for treatment.
The Veterans Support Line adds to existing provision including the Make the Call service and the Ministry of Defence’s Veterans Welfare Service. Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner David Johnstone has previously welcomed the initiative as a significant step toward ensuring no disadvantage for armed forces members in areas including housing and welfare.
Scope and Limitations
While the dedicated line represents progress toward addressing the “clear need” identified by Lyons, several questions remain about the scope and reach of the support:
- The service’s operating hours—limited to weekday daytime—may exclude working veterans or those with urgent needs outside business hours. Unlike the 24/7 Veterans Crisis Line available elsewhere in the UK, Northern Ireland’s new Government line does not currently offer round-the-clock coverage.
- The announcement focuses on benefits and welfare access rather than the pressing legacy issues concerning veterans who served during the Troubles. Recent controversies over the Northern Ireland Legacy Bill have highlighted ongoing anxieties about legal protections for veterans, issues which fall outside the remit of this Department for Communities initiative but remain central to veterans’ welfare concerns.
- With social housing starts falling short of Programme for Government commitments, questions remain about how the Department will address specific housing needs for veterans beyond general advice provision.
Stakeholders may question whether the support line’s hours will be extended to cover evenings and weekends, how the Department will measure uptake among the estimated veteran population, and what coordination exists between this advice line and specialist mental health services.
