Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has announced the reopening of the waiting area at Cairnshill Park and Ride, along with on-site staffing on a trial basis. Starting Monday, 20 January 2025, staff will be present from Monday to Friday between 6:30am and 7:00pm. This initiative aims to encourage more commuters from the south of the city to utilise park and ride facilities when travelling into Belfast city centre.
The Cairnshill site, conveniently located along the Saintfield Road, offers 724 free car parking spaces. If fully utilised, this could result in 724 fewer cars entering and exiting the city centre during peak hours, potentially easing congestion. Commuters can avail themselves of the site’s facilities before boarding frequent bus services into the city, making for a stress-free journey.
The Minister highlighted the site’s benefits, including its safe parking and connectivity to Metro 7 and Ulsterbus services. The availability of self-service ticket vending machines is intended to make purchasing tickets quicker and more convenient. This move comes as part of broader efforts to combat congestion, especially with ongoing works around Grand Central Station.
