Belfast City Council expands kerbside glass recycling to 23,000 more homes

City-Wide Initiative to Enhance Recycling

Belfast City Council is introducing extended kerbside glass recycling to 23,000 more households in east and west Belfast. Launching on Monday, 10 February, this plan is part of a wider initiative to improve recycling accessibility across the city.

This initial phase targets households that previously did not have kerbside glass collections, with the ultimate goal of reaching 70,000 homes over three years.

Key Details of the Rollout

Each newly included household will receive a 44-litre collection box for fortnightly glass pick-ups. Information about the service and deliveries will be provided up to March 2025. Residents are encouraged to follow the guidelines included with their new boxes to ensure proper recycling practices.

The programme is partly funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and is scheduled to expand further in phases two and three, taking place in 2025/26 and 2026/27, subject to funding approval.

Continuing Recycling Efforts

The enhanced service will boost the amount of recyclable household waste and support a circular economy by processing the collected materials locally. For households not yet included, bottle banks and household recycling centres remain available to ensure everyone has a way to recycle glass in the meantime.

Looking Ahead

This expansion highlights the council’s commitment to making recycling more convenient and effective across Belfast. Residents can find additional information on the council’s website, and further announcements about the programme’s subsequent phases will be provided as the rollout continues.
